One Hundred Years of Quarantine

Since everyone is talking about the Covid-19 Pandemic, even I decided to jump on the bandwagon and express my opinions about it. Let me add a disclaimer here that this article is just a dystopian vision of the future.

Now that the year 2019 was declared as the beginning of the Pandemic, let us imagine that the covid-19 virus remains active for another 100 years and we were all asked to socially isolate ourselves and stay at home. Sounds scary, isn’t it? But here are some interesting questions to think about:

· What would happen to our social lives?

· What is it going to be like to be born in the pandemic century?

· How would the world function?

Sounds interesting, isn’t it? Let us explore this idea a bit.

No social life = Boring!!

We are the luckiest group of human beings to have witnessed the beginning of the pandemic. Within few months, we managed to shift our social life from real to virtual platform. All those WhatsApp messages of ‘Where are you?’, ‘I am stuck in traffic’ and ‘I will be there in five minutes’ were replaced ‘Can you hear me?’, ‘I can’t see you’ and ‘My internet connection is bad’.

If we would continue staying at home for 100 years, our children and our grandchildren will never see the life that we experienced. Imagine babies being born at home, growing up at home, learning at home, living life virtually and one day just dying. No schools, no picnics, no crushes, no bunking classes, no parties.

What a boring life it would be! This might also cause increase in health issues as the young ones wouldn’t be exposed enough to nature.

Moreover, travel and tourism would be something that happened in the ‘olden days.’ These children would miss visiting beautiful places on Earth and enjoying a great sunrise or a sunset.

But on the flipside, it does have some benefits. Since, there are not many people running around, fuel consumption is less, and hence less pollution. In fact, sources state that air quality in New Delhi, India has improved compared to 2018.

How would the world function?

One hundred years may not be a long time in history but for an individual it’s an entire lifetime.

People living inside their homes for their entire lives would be socially awkward that they would refuse to adapt to changes. A person’s room becomes a personal space, work space and family space. All in one.

Just imagine, our politicians would be sitting at home and running the country. So, there would be no wars, no violence, no bloodshed. So many lives saved from war yet so many lives lost from disease.

If this continues,

Families would live together and find more time for each other. This means they also learn to protect each other.

So, can we assume that if people protect each other, crime rates would come down?

Would prisons become extinct?

Definitely, something to think about!!
